Here are practical tips to improve your TVS Jupiter's mileage beyond 25 km/l.

Here are practical tips to improve your TVS Jupiter's mileage beyond 25 km/l.

Riding Habits (Biggest Impact)

Maintain steady speeds — riding between 40–55 km/h is the Jupiter's sweet spot for fuel efficiency. Avoid aggressive acceleration and hard braking, which waste the most fuel.

Use engine braking — instead of applying the brake suddenly, roll off the throttle early and let the engine slow the scooter. This saves fuel significantly in city traffic.

Avoid idling for long — if you're stopped for more than 30–40 seconds (at a railway crossing, for example), switch off the engine. The Jupiter's idle fuel consumption adds up quickly.

Carry less load — extra weight directly hurts mileage. Avoid unnecessary items in the storage compartment.

Maintenance Checks

Tyre pressure — this is the single most overlooked factor. Check and maintain:

  • Front: 25 PSI
  • Rear: 31 PSI (solo rider), 33–35 PSI (pillion)

Under-inflated tyres create more rolling resistance and can alone drop mileage by 3–5 km/l.

Air filter — a clogged air filter richens the fuel mixture and kills efficiency. Clean it every 4,000–5,000 km and replace it at 20,000 km.

Spark plug — a worn or fouled spark plug causes incomplete combustion. Inspect at every service; replace around 15,000–20,000 km. Use the TVS-recommended grade (typically NGK CPR8EA-9).

Engine oil — use fresh, correct-grade oil (10W-30 or as per your manual). Old or incorrect viscosity oil increases internal friction. Change every 3,000–4,000 km for city riding.

Brake drag — if your brakes are slightly dragging (pads not fully releasing), it adds constant resistance. You'll feel it as the scooter feeling sluggish without throttle. Get the brake cables and drum adjusted at a service centre.

CVT belt and rollers — a worn variator roller or belt makes the transmission less efficient. If your Jupiter is above 20,000–25,000 km and hasn't had these replaced, it's worth inspecting.

Fuel Habits

Use fresh, good-quality petrol from a reputable pump — stale or adulterated fuel burns inefficiently. Avoid topping up to the brim repeatedly; fill at least half a tank at a time.

Avoid using premium fuel (Speed, Power) unless recommended — on a BS6 Jupiter, regular 87+ octane petrol is perfectly fine and there's no efficiency gain from premium.

Realistic Targets

With the above in order, a well-maintained BS6 TVS Jupiter in city riding should return 35–42 km/l, and on highways 45–50 km/l is achievable. If you're at 25 km/l, the most likely culprits are low tyre pressure, a dirty air filter, or an aggressive throttle hand — fixing those three alone should make a noticeable difference within a tank or two.
